Holy Ball – Santa Pallina is the entry created for the international ‘Sketch Your Deck’ competition organised by Bonobolabo dedicated to the theme of Fantastic Beasts. The project was conceived with the aim of reimagining the silhouette of a skateboard, transforming it into a narrative graphic object, whilst balancing the humour of the story with a solid and striking visual structure.
Concept
An ironic tribute to Holy Ball, the martyr of the local park. The artwork draws on the iconography of the traditional holy card: the saint watches as her heir is devoured by the central head of a three-headed monster, whilst the other two heads look on in astonishment and envy. It is a visual account of the metamorphosis a dog undergoes when it spots a ball.
Execution
The layout makes the most of the shape and verticality of the board without obscuring key details. The linework and background texture evoke the tactile quality of a linocut, digitally reworked for printing on wood and to achieve excellent visual contrast.
